Canadian Women stay on the podium in Lake Placid

Canadian Madison Charney stepped into the limelight at America's Cup Races 5 and 6 in Lake Placid this past week, while teammate Cassie Hawrysh continued her renting out space atop the podium, as the duo battled for the silver and bronze medals on both days.

Hawrysh took silver in Race 5 after a first place second heat, for a total of 1:54.41, edging out Charney by 19 hundredths. On the second day of racing Charney won the battle in a combined time of 1:54.43, narrowly taking second by four hundredths of a second.

"These were fantastic races for Madison Charney – fast pushes and really showing herself as one of our top development sliders," said the Interprovincial team coach Carla Pavan. "Consistent performances for Cassie as well - huge leap from prior seasons."

On the men's side Ian Mills finished just short of the podium, landing in fourth on both days of racing. Greg Maidment rounded off the top 6 in Race #5, but finally made the jump upstairs, earning the Candians men's only medal of the trip, with a bronze in Race #6.

"Greg is sliding his way back onto the podium and battling it out with Ian Mills who is racing very consistently and showing huge improvement over last year as well," said Pavan.

World Cup sliders Ben Sandford and Katherine Eustace, both of New Zealand, took all four gold medal spots as they continue to prepare for World Championships, which will be held on the Lake Placid track next February.
